Dad, my older brother and I would select just the right cedar for our Christmas tree. After nailing a one-by-eight board on the bottom, we would place it at the special spot beside the piano. We made our own decorations, except for the 10 large red satin “apples” mother had carefully kept for many years. Our decorations were strips of red and green construction paper (we “borrowed” from school) cut into strips and taped together in alternate colors to make a chain. We popped popcorn and sewed them together with needle and thread; another chain. After wrapping these around the tree, Mom would carefully hang the satin apples, and then came the icicles, small strips of silver paper that was thrown all over the tree. Oh, it was beautiful!
My immediate family was a trio, with a cat. I knew my cousins from spending summers with them, but had never seen them in winter. I didn’t know that they knew how to skate. There were so many gifts under the tree; I had never seen that many. My grandmother and mother were pianists, so we all gathered ‘round and sang Christmas carols and drank egg nog.
