Please don’t think I had a difficult childhood. We never lacked for plenty of food. The wood fires and a pile of bed quilts kept us warm. I had bibbed overalls for school, older bibbed overalls for work and a “set” of Sunday clothes for church. Mostly, I had love and security. I had no concept of child abuse, no meaning of the word “poverty” and no fear in a house that had no keys. I suppose one other reason I remember that Christmas is because my school picture for 1942-43 still sits in our lovely home.
