Officer Ronil Singh, 33, made a traffic stop early Wednesday in Newman, a small town around 100 miles southeast of San Francisco, NBC affiliate KCRA first reported, and he was later heard calling out "shots fired" over the radio. Responding officers found Singh with a gunshot wound, and he later died at the hospital, according to police.

By Christmas Eve in 1942, I was sick. Our little cedar Christmas tree, cut from the fence row where the birds had planted it years earlier, was decorated with one strand of colored lights. Our family never exchanged gifts, but Santa Claus always came to see me; but that morning I was too sick to go down to the tree, so Mama brought my gifts upstairs where she and Daddy and I shared a bedroom. It was a very sad Christmas anyway because my 19-year-old sister had “run away and got married” just a month earlier.
With the holidays officially kicked into high gear, getting ready for a festive night out affords one the opportunity to have some unabashed fun while primping. Hair accessories? Check. A fire engine-red lip? Check. A glittering, gilded eye? You get the picture.
My husband and I have been proud parents of the fuzzy and four-legged children and proud aunt and uncle of a niece and nephew that officially belong to my only sister and her husband. For the past approximately 30 years, they had been the center and highlight of my family’s Christmas season, as with all families, and for the first time we were facing our first Christmas without either one of them.
