On the Sunday night before Christmas, we had a little “Christmas program” with a flashlight to burn a few minutes under some red tissue paper and some “stove wood” for the three little boys who were wise men who “came from afar.” With the other nativity characters standing around Mary and Joseph, and a fire in the church’s potbelly stove, Mama read the Christmas story. At the end of the program, each child picked up a “treat” from the back bench. It was a brown paper bag that Daddy, who did not attend church, had bought that day in Stokesdale and Mama had partially filled equally with “nuts, fruits and candy.” We had “preaching” once a month.
